We hope to develop in all our pupils a love of music and to have the opportunity to enjoy musical experiences. We provide opportunities for all children to create, play, perform and enjoy music, to develop the skills, to appreciate a wide variety of musical forms, and to begin to make judgements about the quality of music.

Our Year 4 classes are learning to play the Steel Pans this year with Reading All Steel Percussion Orchestra. We also have a Steel Pan band who rehearse on a Tuesday evening. Steel Pans have been part of Oxford Road for over 40 years.

We also have outside music tuition from Berkshire Maestros. Specialist music teachers deliver weekly Piano and Guitar lessons to small groups of children.

Through our teaching of Music at ORCS we aim:

  • To give all children an equal opportunity to take part in the experience of music throughout their time in primary school and to develop a lifelong love of music.
  • To encourage children to express themselves musically as individuals and within small and large groups.
  • To enhance the children’s listening skills and to develop their appreciation of music.
  • To give children the opportunity to use their voices and bodies with confidence and creativity in a musical way.
