Reading

We love reading in Year 1!

Year 1's reading books will be changed every Friday.
The children MUST have their books in school everyday so we can read with them.

Click here for some useful tips on how you can support your child with Reading at home. We suggest you read with your child at least 4-5 times a week.

If you need any support with reading at home, please come and speak with Miss Panetta.

Spellings

This term, we will be focussing on learning the Year 1 common exception words. We will have a weekly spelling quiz on Fridays. This is the list of spellings we will be learning.

Here are some games and activities ideas you can do with your child to make learning spellings more fun!

Maths

In Spring 2, we are learning to add and subtract numbers to 20. We will learn to read, write, and interpret mathematical statements involving addition (+), subtraction (–), and equals (=) signs. We will also practise solving a range of one-step problems that involve addition and subtraction, using concrete objects, pictorial representations, and missing number problems such as 7 = ☐ – 9.

Throughout the term, we will continue to develop fluency in representing and using number bonds and related subtraction facts within 20 through The Mastery of Number programme.

Please help your child at home by:

  • Practising counting to 100 forwards and backwards, starting at random numbers not just from 0

  • Helping them spot two-digit numbers at home and when out and about

  • Asking them to identify the number and explain how many tens and how many ones it has

  • Supporting your child to learn number bonds to 5, then 10, and—when they are fully ready—to 20. The game Hit the Button is a great way to practise this.

This fun shark game helps children match the numeral to the correct tens and ones shown.
